Eternal Father, grant, we pray,
To all Marines, both night and day,
The courage, honor, strength, and skill
Their Land to serve, thy law fulfill;
Be thou the shield forevermore
From every peril to the Corps.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

Shortly after midnight on 02 Feb 1968 the District Headquarters and Combined Action compounds at Cam Lo received heavy mortar bombardments followed by ground attacks by an estimated two battalions of NVA troops. Artillery and air support was called, but heavy fighting continued until about 6 AM, when the NVA withdrew. Reaction forces from both east and west converging on Cam Lo succeeded in trapping a considerable number of NVA as they tried to cross the Cam Lo River, and sweeps to the south also encountered scattered NVA units. Overall, about 150 enemy troops were killed and over 30 captured - but at least 11 US servicemen were killed in the fighting:
  • C Co, 11th Eng Bn
  • A Co, 1st Bn, 4th Marines
    • GySgt Wayne L. Sapp, Fallbrook, CA
    • Cpl Kenneth Borowicz, Buffalo, NY
    • Cpl Patrick J. Lavelle, Pasadena, CA

  • D Co, 1st Bn, 4th Marines
    • Cpl Larry L. Maxam, Glendale, CA (Medal of Honor)
    • LCpl Roger E. Kelly, Kenmore, NY

  • G Btry, 65th Artillery
    • SSG Hollis R. Hale, Dallas, GA
    • SP4 Johnnie N. Sheares, New York, NY

  • Advisory Team 4, MACV Advisors
    • MAJ James C. Payne, Marked Tree, AR
