Edward I do not recall you having any family back at Fort Devens, Mass. I also remember you as a person who kept to himself. I was with you at the battle of Ap Bau Bang on 12 Nov 1965.

You were the patrol leader of an ambush patrol that was sent out early on the evening before 12 Nov 1965. I was told by your assistant patrol leader that the entire patrol was able to break contact with a large VC force that your patrol encountered (minus one man). The assistant patrol leader also told me that you ordered him to return the patrol to our base perimeter and you went back to find the missing man.

Edward, forgive me-but Memory fails me as to the name of the assistant patrol leader and the missing man. I will always remember you for this selfless sacrifice you made in an attempt to save another soldier. God comfort your soul, I will never forget.

From a comrade-in-arms,
Robert Hoffman
