From a friend and classmate at USNA, |
I was, am, a long time family friend of the Fitzgerald's. I grew up with Billy's brothers' and often visited the family home in Shady Rill, Middlesex on weekends. I knew Martin and Robert (my classmate) better than Billy. Billy was often away when I was there as he was in the Navy or at the Academy. When he was home he would engage in a game of football with us (Martin, me, Robert and my brother Bobby). Sometimes Bill's father or brother in law would play to make the sides "even". It did not seem so to me though as it was always Bill's youngest brother Robert and me against the "older and taller boys". I know Betty (Bill's wife) fairly well, but not as well as I knew him and his immediate family. Your web site memorial to (and picture of) Bill brought back a lot of old, wonderful memories of him and his family. Marty is the only surviving sibling now and I do not see him much. I was born in Montpelier but lived in Putnamville, Middlesex until I was 22. Use to ride our bikes over there and back.
Thank you for keeping his memory and spirit alive. |
Notes from The Virtual WallBill Fitzgerald, son of a retired Chief Petty Officer, grew up in Montpelier, Vermont, graduating from Montpelier High School in June 1956. He followed in his father's footsteps and enlisted in the United States Navy. As an enlisted sailor, Bill served in USS SAMUEL B. ROBERTS (DD 823), USS HUGH PURVIS (DD 709), and USS GEARING (DD 710). He eventually earned selection for appointment to the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland. After receiving his commission, Ensign Fitzgerald returned to destroyers. After his first sea duty tour he was selected for assignment to the Naval Advisory Group in Vietnam as the senior U. S. advisor at Coastal Defense Group 16. The group's compound was located adjacent to the village of Co Luy, near the delta of the Tra Khuc River, some 70 miles southeast of Danang. At about 0300 on 7 August 1967 the compound was attacked by two Viet Cong battalions. The Citation for his Navy Cross describes his actions:
