I met Corporal Fuss at the San Francisco International Airport when we were flying with orders to Hawaii. All of us somehow wound up at the airport's watering hole. We arrived in Hawaii and were assigned to Kanehoe Bay Barracks. We joined the Second Marine Brigade which later became 1st Battalion, 27th Marines. Since we were both E-4s, we hit it off pretty good. Corporal Fuss was an easy going type of Marine who was able to communicate well with the troops. He was well respected. He gave of his time to keep things running smoothly. We were supposed to undergo extensive training in Hawaii and were scheduled to go on maneuvers in the Indian Ocean around Malaysia. It was an international tactical competition. We never got there, we were diverted to Vietnam in January 1968. All of a sudden, Corporal Fuss was a squad leader. I had just made E-5, I became Right Guide, whatever that was.

Corporal Fuss was a damn good leader. He had just turned 22 a few days before he got hit. I remember his ever-present smiling face ... and I miss him.
