Charles was a career soldier from Odessa, Texas, an oil field city near New Mexico. He was a mortar platoon sergeant and he was killed by fragment wounds from an explosive device. He was in his second enlistement in the Army at the time. He was married. He is remembered on the

27 Sep 2007 Charles was born in Hallsville, Texas near Marshall in Harrison County. He spent his early years there and then lived in Cloivs, New Mexico and Odessa, Texas. He entered the Army June 20, 1961, completing basic and AIT at Fort Hood, then spent 2 years overseas at an APO 6 address with the 17th Infantry Regiment as an indirect fire crewman and squad leader. He joined the 9th Divison at Fort Riley, Kansas after re-enlisting in April 1966. He was married and the father of twins who were born while he was assigned to Fort Riley. He mobilized with the 9th Infantry to Vietnam on December 10, 1966 and was killed in his 13th month in country. He had extended his tour 6 months and was killed in the first month of his extension. During the action that cost him his life, he was awarded the Silver Star, the Purple Heart, the Vietnam Military Merit Medal and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm (Individual award).
