Excerpted from letters from Sergeant Roger Fellers:

October 18, 1969
"Im sorry I worried you by not writing, but we've been busy as heck around here. We're not cutting charlies any slack! Im sending a clipping about the "black scarves.' that's the nickname this battalion has. If you'll notice in the pictures you have, everybody in the pictures has a black scarf on. The C.O. even calls himself dracula after the horror movie theme. But we get the job done without many G.I.s getting hurt."

November 29, 1969:
"P.S. the award of the purple heart - dont go crazy. I only got tic-tic in the leg. didnt even leave a scar. I'll tell you about it when I get home. "

Obituary:
"Sgt. Fellers was killed in action in Vietnam last Friday when a land mine detonated while on a combat mission. Sgt Fellers joined the army October 14, 1968."
"...surving are his parents of Quanah, Texas, and two daughters, Belinda age 5, and Tammy, age two, both of Quanah."
