A Note from The Virtual Wall In August 1968 the 2nd Battalion, 27th Marines was tasked with providing security around the Danang military complex. Part of this mission required heavy patrolling of the so-called "rocket belt" around Danang - the area from which the enemy could launch rocket attacks against the Danang bases. The 2/27 Command Chronology for the month reports that at 0730 on 16 August a squad patrol from 2nd Platoon, Hotel Company approaching a treeline was fired on by .30 caliber, AK-47s, rocket propelled grenades, and between 12 and 18 mortar rounds. Two other squads responded and the Marines swept the area. One Marine was killed and two wounded; one North Vietnamese Army soldier was killed and two captured. The Marine who died was Cpl Lewis C. Gills. Lewis Clarence Gills, Corporal, United States Marine Corps, rests in Plot H-1437, Hampton VA Medical Center Cemetery, Hampton, Virginia.
