This Marine was mortaly injured Aug 16 1968 when a hand grenade was accidentally discharged killing two at the time of the incident and wounding several others including Ed Link, Elyson Taylor, and William Gooden. Surviving the initial blast, Lowell was rushed to an aid station by Elyson Taylor, his boyhood friend and fellow Marine who served together throughout most of their enlistment prior to this tragic event. Lowell was medevaced to the hospital ship REPOSE where medical personnel made a valiant effort to save Lowell, who succumbed to his wounds several days later.
