It was a cold December Saturday afternoon in Southwest Minnesota in 1968. Dad and I went to the church to shovel snow off the sidewalks and parking lot and I wasn't happy about 2 hours of hard labor. Erwin showed up, just back from basic training in Fort Lewis, WA after being drafted in the fall of 1968. He spent some of his last days at home shoveling snow with dad and I. He didn't say much that afternoon - he just worked. That was his unassuming character, I guess. He left for Viet Nam in mid-January, 1969. Erwin died in Tay Ninh province in South Viet Nam from a night mortar attack on April 29, 1969. We had his funeral at church with his High School graduation picture on the casket with the American Flag. There is so much more to Erwin's life, his faith, athletic achievements, his dedication to family and friends. I'm sorry for writing so short a tribute to him. You are not forgotten and your sacrifice is honored each Veterans' Day in our home. From a friend. |
