A Note from The Virtual Wall

The following text is extracted from a message sent by the III MAF Command Center on 08 March 1969:

The location given is on the coastal railroad about 5 kilometers north-northwest of Duc Pho. Given the location and the composition of the US force - combat engineers and infantrymen - it seems likely that a mine sweep team was ambushed by NVA/VC troops while checking the railroad for mines. The four US soldiers who died in the engagement were

  • D Co, 1st Bn, 20th Infantry
  • D Co, 19th Eng Bn, 937th Eng Group
    • SP4 Samuel J. Izzard, Washington, DC
    • PFC Paul D. Haydon, Louisville, KY
