Klaus was a high school classmate of mine. Being born in Europe, he was not terribly good at American sports. He and I shared being chosen last for many of the Phys Ed teams. When we were introduced to soccer, again we were the last chosen and were on the same team. Unbeknownst to everyone else, Klaus had played soccer all his life and was the star of the entire Phys Ed class.
Years later, I got involved in local youth soccer, in part to Klaus' memory. I became a referee and a member of the Board of Directors for six years, and during that time visited the Wall, making a rubbing of Klaus' name, which I keep with me to this day. I think of him often.
