On a dark stone wall
In a former swamp
Is carved a name
I remember well
He was strong
And he loved my mom
But he went away
To the gates of hell

I remember he watched me play
With my soldiers one fine day
And he said, as I recall
Soldiers on both sides will fall
Then one day his orders came
There were bad men he had to tame
Far away, we could not see
The battles of his men and he

Every week my sister
And I received a letter
Telling us he wished that
He could come back
home and stay
Please obey your mother
Take care of one another
And then try to explain to us
Why he went away

Late one night, our phone did ring
Only bad news did it bring
The man who tried to keep the peace
Was himself now fast asleep
The biggest lesson that he taught
Was some battles must be fought
But the pain will still remain
Was his sacrifice in vain?

On a dark stone wall
In a former swamp
Is carved a name
I remember well
He was strong
And he loved my mom
But he went away
To the gates of hell

From his son.
