I took this picture in Kontum District Headquarters about a month before their deaths.

Sergeant Walter V. Marcum is on the left; Captain Bernard Hodges is on the right. Sergeant Marcum was a weapons advisor on Hodges' Mobile Advisor Team.

Bernie Hodges was a new Mobile Advisory Team leader towards the end of my tour in-country. He was learning the ropes quickly and was intent on doing a good job of training and supporting South Vietnamese infantry units. His tenacity, leadership, and devotion to duty made a significant impact on the lives of the South Vietnamese officers and soldiers who worked with his team as well as on the Montagnards and Vietnamese living in the villages and hamlets in his area of operations. America lost an outstanding leader and brave soul on December 6, 1970.
