When I was five years old, Doug came to San Diego for Basic Training. I remember looking out the window at the rain as my family drove to the airport to pick him up. Doug stayed with us that night, and left for the Depot the next day. Several months later, my mother sat me down in our kitchen. She asked if I remembered my cousin who had visited that rainy night. Then, my mother lowered her eyes and told me that Doug had been killed in a distant country. That was the first of many stories I would hear of Vietnam. They never got any better.
