Albert, or "Sonny" as he is known by the Horners, had three brothers in the Marines (Mike, Donnie, Tom), one in the Army (Doug), and one in the Navy (Danny), all made it out of Vietnam alive. Unfortunately, I never met him (wasn't born at the time), however, from information provided to me he was as patriotic as he was religious, a Protestant. He went through MCRD San Diego, and was sent in country December 17, 1967, and participated in Operation Badger Tooth. To his dismay, this was the end of his life - some time around noon on December 27, 1967, Albert was shot in the chest and killed. However, 27 men from Lima company were killed during this horrible battle, each and every soldier, unique in his own way, fought just as hard as the next, but to their disheartened families, they all ended in the great waiting room in the sky.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

When Battalion Landing Team 3/1, built around the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines, landed at Than Tham Khe during Operation Badgertooth they ran into a buzz-saw. At day's end on 27 Dec 1967, 3/1 had lost 49 men, most of them from Lima Company:
  • H&S Company: 3 men
  • K Company: 6 men
  • L Company: 28 men
  • M Company: 12 men
The final casualty from Than Tham Khe was Corporal David O. Kamp, rendered a quadraplegic by small arms fire; he died on 19 March 1997 of complications from his injuries.
