Charlie and I were drafted on the same day, 9/6/66. There were 5 of us from Granville [population 2400] that day. Only Charlie was sent to Vietnam.
Charlie graduated from high school in 1965 with my girl friend [now my wife 4/7/67] in May 1966. One night Charlie, another friend, and I decided to go to Montreal [about 3.5 hours north] at about 2:30 am. We went in Charlie's car, a 1956 Ford, black with a white top. He was a little too drunk to drive so he asked me to. In Westport NY a state trooper spotted the out of date inspection sticker and gave me a ticket, but the problem was no way would the car pass inspection. Bad ball joints, a couple lights out, bad exhaust, etc. We had a good time on Saint Catherine Street in Montreal, though. When we got home we had to figure a way to get the car inspected - no money to fix it. We had another friend who had a 1956 Ford, black with a white hood top and trunk. We borrowed his car, put Charlie's plates on it, and took it to a town near Granville with Charlie's registration. That garage gave that car the most thorough inspection I have ever seen, but they never checked the VIN number. We got our draft notices on 7/5/66, my 21st birthday. We spent the summer partying and water skiing at a nearby lake [St Catherine in Vermont; Granville is on the border]. |
