On 15 May 1969 Operation LAMAR PLAIN began in Quang Tin Province when the 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile) sent a brigade task force south to assist the Americal Division. The objective was to relieve NVA pressure on several threatened installations including the provincial headquarters at Tam Ky, Tien Phuoc district headquarters, and LZ Professional.

On the morning of 18 May, Bravo Company, 1-501st Infantry climbed Hill 187 which was located about 4 km north of LZ Professional. Bravo Company was accompanied by Echo Company which consisted of the recon platoon and the mortar platoon. The troops had hardly reached the top of the hill when several mortar rounds exploded among them without causing any casualties. A short time later one mortar round landed on the east of the company command post, and another on the west side. A third round landed directly onto the CP killing the company commander and the senior aidman, SP4 Russell Lane Jett, while wounding six men. Mortar rounds continued to fall upon Hill 187 until early that evening. In all 4 men died on Hill 187 that day and 18 men were wounded.
