31 Dec 2003 He lived in the house behind me for a little while. He was actually as scrawny as I was. I remember how we used to play war with our BB guns when we were kids ... never realizing that we were going to be shooting real bullets in the not too distant future. Great memories of those nights as kids when we slept out in the yard, staying up all night, sharing the Camel cigarettes we had swiped, telling each other how we were going to change the world when we grew up. Johnnie and I shared a special bond, because we were the little guys that everyone picked on. When I heard Johnny was killed I was devastated, although I tried to act like it didn't bother me that much. Johnny and I were tough guys, you know. Didn't let things bother us. I always thought that Johnny didn't get the chance to change the world like he thought he would, because he had to go fight someone else's war and ended up losing his life. But now I know different. I know that because of the way he led his men, someone aspired to be like Sergeant Jones and that changed them and in turn changed the world. I know that because of Johnny's actions in combat someone else got to live and that changed them and in turn changed the world. Johnny did change the world. Not in the way he thought he would, but he changed the world in different ways. Thanks, Johnny, for giving your life so others could live in a free world. I think about you, Johnny, and miss you. Thanks for being my friend.
