A Note from The Virtual Wall

Operation BEACON HILL was conducted by Battalion Landing Team 1/4 as part of a larger operation along and within the southern half of the Demilitarized Zone. BLT 1/4 went ashore on 20 March and spent the next ten days conducting operations in an area centered about eight kilometers northeast of the fire base at Con Thien. The area was well populated with North Vietnamese Army positions and BLT 1/4 had numerous contacts as well as attacks on their night defensive positions.

Early on 24 March an NVA company attacked the Charlie Company 1/4 night defensive position, killing 6 Marines and wounding 17 others at the cost of 46 known NVA dead, and there were scattered contacts throught the rest of the day. On the 25th, Delta 1/9 was working about 9 kilometers northeast of Con Thien when it came in contact with entrenched NVA troops. The Battalion's Command Chronology contains the following entry for 25 March:

"At 251415H [2:15 pm, 25 March] Company D reported lead elements receiving heavy automatic weapons fire from the left and right front. ... At 251445H Company D engaged an estimated NVA battalion in trench lines and prepared positions extending from YD147731 to YD145737. Air Strikes were called."
The engagement resulted in five deaths from Delta 1/4:
  • 2ndLt Jackson E. Cox, Waynesboro, GA;
  • Cpl Charles B. Clanton, Mobile, AL;
  • Cpl Anthony J. Korpisz, Baltimore, MD;
  • Pfc Curtis C. Joosten, Pella, IA; and
  • Pfc Glenn A. Menowsky, Bridgewater, MA.
