Bill was my uncle ... that is one of the reasons I joined the Army. For 7 years I served in the National Guard. I just wish I could have gotten to know him. I respect him a lot.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

Between 26 Jan and 10 Mar 1968 the 3rd Battalion, 22nd Infantry participated in Operation SARATOGA in the area west of Saigon. Part of 3/22's responsibilities included establishing night ambushes on the waterways. The 3/22 After Action Report contains the following entry for 03 Mar 1968:
"0100 hours Company A sank 4 VC sampans at XT813074, resulting in 13 VC (body count). ... At 0740 hours Company A, while extracting from ambush position, had 1 boat capsize resulting in 6 US non-battle casualties."
The incident took place in the Saigon River about 7 kilometers south of Phu Cuong. The soldiers who died when the boat overturned were
  • SGT Francisco Franco, Orosi, CA;
  • SP4 Vincent A. Datena, North Babylon, NY;
  • SP4 Jimmy F. Lehman, South Bloomingville, OH;
  • SP4 Jimmie E. Parker, Fremont, CA;
  • SP4 Richard C. Spencer, Bremerton, WA; and
  • PFC William A. Jordan, Prescott, AZ.
