I was aboard the gunboat with Richard when action started. He was training me to do his job as assault boat engineer even though he was TAD. He was killed before me performing his duties and returning fire. There were two more casualties that day.

I would like to say he was a good friend, a good sailor and did his job well. It was very much a pleasure to serve with him. I would just like to say he was a man. I would like to talk with his family to share my admiration and appreciation of my friend.

I am looking for friends of Richard Henry Langford who were with him at the time of his death. His sister would like to hear from them. If they will write to me I will pass the information (phone number or e-mail address) to her.

Thank you.

From a friend of his sister's,

A Note from The Virtual Wall

USS COOK

Although assigned to the USS BEXAR, an attack transport, Petty Officer Langford had volunteered for temporary duty with the USS COOK as a landing craft engineman. On 23 April 1965 one of the COOK's boats was landing a 1st Force Recon Company patrol, which was engaged by enemy troops upon insertion. The patrol was able to withdraw under fire to the boat, but two sailors and one Marine were killed in the action:

  • EN2 Richard H. Langford, Dover, AR, USS BEXAR (APA-237)
  • TM3 William R. Fuhrman, Chicago, IL, USS COOK (APD-130)
  • CPL Lowell H. Merrell, Faxon, TN, 1st Force Recon Co, 3rd Recon Bn
