Clem Spencer Lowery, Jr

Clem Lowery was a very dear friend. He was the Godfather of my only son, Aubrey Simonds. Clem should not have been allowed to go into combat. He had severe problems with his kidneys and other health issues but that did not stop the Army from sending him off to die. When I heard of his death, I made up my mind then that the old saying "only the good die young" is true.

Clem was the only child of people who bore him quite late in life. I did not get to meet his parents until I went to his funeral in rural Virginia. I cannot begin to describe the pain that I saw on his parents' faces. They adored their son and I am sure they could not understand why they had to lose him.

Every time I get the opportunity to visit the Traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall, I break down when I see his name inscribed there.

Most of all, there is so much guilt on my part. I was fortunate enough to escape having to go into combat during the Vietnam War. I had hypertension and was married with a child.

Clem - I miss you even today and was so fortunate to know you even though for such a short time. Bless you for the ultimate sacrifice you made to keep our Country safe - With much love - Bill Simonds
