I knew Norman in his years in Odessa, Texas when he attended Crockett Junior High School and Odessa High School. He was a year behind me. His family had moved to Odessa when Norman was in grade school from San Angelo, Texas. His dad was employed in the Maintenance Department with the Ector County School District. Norman was always upbeat and was a legitimate optimist. He saw humor in everything, even when a situation had little humor. Before his senior year in high school, Norman's family returned to San Angelo, where Norman completed high school. He enlisted in the Marine Corps shortly after graduating in 1966. He was trained as a crew chief and was assigned as crewchief on a CH-53. On March 27, 1970, Norman was the lone casualty when his helicopter made a landing in a hot LZ. Norman was shot to death by a sniper as they were disembarking riflemen. Norman was buried with full military honors in the Fairmount Cemetery in San Angelo, Texas. The photos are from Boot Camp and from the 1963 Odessa High School annual, Odessa, Texas where he attended his sophomore and junior years of high school. He is remembered on the Permian Basin Vietnam Veterans' Memorial.
