My husband and I went to high school with Freddie. My husband played football with him. I can remember when Freddie was sent home, his body was at his house and everyone was at his house. He was the only one in our class to be killed in Vietnam. This was a sad time for all of us. My husband served in 1970 and 1971 but came home safely.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

The 199th Infantry Brigade lost two men to mines on 01 Dec 1969. While The Virtual Wall cannot prove it so, it seems likely that SP4 Long, a combat engineer, was attached to C Company, 5/12 Infantry, and that both men were killed in the same incident. The two were SGT James L. Clarkson, Trion, GA, C Co 5/12th Infantry, and SP4 Freddie L. Long, 87th Engineer Company.
