On July 10th 1069 Ernie's squad was on a patrol between Cobb Bridge and Tugboat, in an area of several villages called the, "Bo Bans." There one of them set off a booby-trap. I was told later by some of the survivors that there were three quick explosions.

Three members of the squad - Jack Lackey, Ernie, and Doug Whiting - were killed on the spot. The squad leader, Tom Root, lost both legs and had some other injuries. He died a few days later (07/27/1969) on a flight to Japan. A couple of other members of the squad were wounded.

The attached picture was taken at Hill 22 just outside Danang, probably in March '69.
