Tacoma GI VN Casualty - Spec. 4 Richard Harold Mehegan, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Mehegan, of 5010 N. 31st St., died Tuesday in a Vietnam hospital of wounds received in Army action 2 Mar (1969) in the area between Chu Lei [sic] and Saigon, according to notification received by his parents. Spec. 4 Mehegan had lived here all his life before entering the Army in January 1968. He attended Wilson High School and was a member of the Ninth Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. the soldier took his basic training at Fort Lewis, was assigned to the 11th Infantry Brigade, and arrived in Vietnam last 25 May (1968). He was to have returned to the States in 2 1/2 months. In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sons, Donald and John, and a daughter, Trisha, all of Tacoma; two brothers, Thomas, of Harker's Island NC and Terry, of Tacoma; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Chester Wallace of Fox Island. The body will be accompanied to Tacoma by a cousin, Army Spec. 4 David Nelson of Oregon who is also serving in Vietnam.
