I would like to hear from Lieutenant Mendall's family.

My brother, Cecil Durard Jr., served with Lieutenant Mendall, and was with him at the time of his demise.

He has something he would like to return to the family.

I was a friend who served with him when he died. I would love to talk to the family. I have a photo of him taken at LZ Uplift.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

Alpha Company, 3/503rd Infantry lost four men to an accident on 16 January 1971:
  • 1LT Carlton J. Mendall, Hyde Park, MA;
  • SSG Earl Nelson, Memphis, TN;
  • PFC Martin Jim, Mayetta, KS; and
  • PFC Bruce C. Shover, Marietta, OH.
The only information available to The Virtual Wall is the casualty records themselves, which appear to indicate that PFC Jim accidentally detonated an explosive device (grenade? defensive mine?). The explosion killed him and the other three men.
