I remember, I remember - Cpl. Charles Henry A Co. 1968
From a brother-in-arms,
Dennis and Gerald were part of a team that was pulling guard duty for a radio relay on hill 819. They were killed together in the early morning of 28 Dec 1968. Dennis and I were the only Latter-Day Saints in A Co. I arrived on the hill for a month's rotation of guard duty a day after they were killed. I have pictures of the hill and a memorial to them on it.
From a friend,
A Note from The Virtual WallCompany A of the 3rd Recon Battalion lost two men on 28 Dec 1968 - LCpl Dennis E. Mickelson and LCpl Gerald G. McGinley of Concord, California. LCpl Mickelson received a posthumous Silver Star for his actions three weeks earlier (05 Dec 1968), when A/3rd Recon lost another man from Oregon ... LCpl Henry M. T. Hames, Jr, of Portland.
LCpl Mickelson and LCpl McGinley were killed by a boobytrap on Hill 819, located about 14 kilometers south of Mai Loc airfield. The incident was reported in the 3rd Recon post-patrol report:
