Dad, I miss you so much. It has been forty years - you have a wonderful grandson who is so proud of you and what you stood for. I understand now what you loved and died for.

From his son,
Hal

A Note from The Virtual Wall

In early October 1967 an AC-47 gunship (tail number 43-48591) from the 4th Air Commando Squadron was hit while conducting a daylight fire mission in the vicinity of Hue. Seven men died when the AC-47 was shot down by AAA fire:
  • LtCol Van H. Newville, Phoenix, AZ;
  • Major William W. Duck, Quincy, FL;
  • Capt Arthur R. Coughlin, Mobile, AL;
  • TSgt James C. Krouse, North Highlands, CA;
  • MSgt Charles J. Rogiers, Rock Island, IL;
  • A2C William W. Scoville, Clark Lake, MI; and
  • A2C Walter C. Wright, Las Vegas, NV.
Hobson's usually very accurate "Vietnam Air Losses" lists this loss on 02 October, but the casualty records reflect 03 Oct 1967 as the "date of death" for the seven men. The casualty database also says the men "Died while Missing". It seems possible the aircraft was downed on 02 Oct and the bodies recovered on 03 Oct.
