This was Arturo's first mission with us and our recon team. He had been with the mortar platoon upon arriving in Vietnam in December 1967. I knew who he was because the mortar platoon group was part of E Company and so were we. Arturo could have stayed in mortars where it was not as hazardous duty but must have felt it was his calling to become recon. Arturo gave his life for his country. For this, I was honored to have been his friend.

I knew Arturo Olivares-Martinez as Arthur M. Olivares in Tillamook, Oregon, just before he joined the service. I was a young teenage girl who was a dear friend of Art's. I loved him and remember him as a sweet and caring person who you could always count on. I will always remember that summer on the beach. I was only 4'11'' and petite. I lost my shoe and the waves carried it out to the ocean. Art picked me up and carried me down the beach 1/2 mile. He was not that big or tall and we laughed. I will always love him and remember him. I have a picture of him in his uniform that I would like to put on the website so everyone can remember him as well.
