4 Mar 2005 Pike Cty. Marine Dies In Action In Viet Nam A Pike County, Ky., Marine has been identified as one of 22 servicemen killed in action in Viet Nam this week. He was Pfc. Charles E. Osborne borne, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Troy Osborne of Myrna, Ky. who had been in the U. S. Marine Corps since August of 1964 and in Viet Nam since July of 1965. He was assigned to Company D, 1st Battalion of the Third Marines. Born in Pike County on Feb. 5, 1946, he attended Dorton High School. Surviving in addition to the parents are four sisters, Mrs. Everett Hamilton of Jonarey Ky., Mrs. Clyde Acree of Pinch W. Va., Hazel and Mae Alice Osborne, at home, and four brothers, Bruce, Ellis Eugene and Vester Osborne, all at home, and Troy Osborne, Jr. in Michigan. The body will be returned to the Call and Son Funeral Home in Pikeville. Paintsville (Kentucky) Herald Date unknown Charles ("Fats") was a classmate of mine. He was a quiet and very nice guy. Later in life I married one of his older brothers and became his sister-in-law. The last time I saw Fats was before he went to Vietnam ... he was home on leave and came to visit us and play with his new nephew. He was very happy to be home. We named our second son after his Uncle Charles. Charles will always be remembered as a good friend and brother. In his belongings send home he had bought an outfit in Vietnam for his nephew. 05 Sep 2005 Operation: Rough rider. Province: Quang Nam, Thua Thien Unit: Delta 1/3 Mission: Provide security and protection for truck convoy from Da Nang to Hue/Phu Bia and return 072110 - A squad patrol from "D" Company had a meeting engagement with an estimated three VC, vicinity coordinates (908837), VC and friendly force open fire at approximately the same time, the VC firing approximately 80 rounds of automatic and semi-automatic small arms fire, and the Marine squad approximately 1,000 M-14 and 19 M-79 rounds. The VC after the initial exchange of fire attempted to disengage and pursued by Marine squad both physically and by fire. The squad requested and received illumination from 81 mm and from artillery. After contact was lost the area where the engagement took place was searched by the Marine patrol. Pfc Osborne was the point man and was shot on the right side of abdomen, evacuated by helicopter, and died from his wound before reaching "C" Med. A Note from The Virtual Wall The format of Mr. Osborne's entry above indicates that it came from a Command Chronology's "Significant Events" section or more likely from the battalion's Operations Journal - in any case, a contemporary operational report. Regretably, The Virtual Wall has not been able to obtain the 1/3 Marines Command Chronology for February 1966, but we are perfectly prepared to accept the entry at face value.
