I went to high school with Larry and went to Vietnam before him.
He was killed after I got home.

Robert Larry Oaks attended schools at Ackerly and Lamesa. While in the Army, he was selected to attend the NCO Academy where he was the outstanding NCO graduate and he was promoted to SSG E-6, the only promotion in his class. He also completed parachute training, leadership training phases I and II at Fort Polk, Louisiana, and Fort Ord, California. In Vietnam, he was assigned to Long Rang Recon Patrol. His MOS was infantry operations and intelligence specialist. He was killed by gunshot on November 11, 1969.

SSG Oaks is buried in Ackerly, a community between Lamesa, Texas, and Big Spring, Texas. He is remembered by the Permian Basin Vietnam Veteran's Memorial located at Midland, Texas and also by the Big Spring, Texas Vietnam Memorial.

There's rarely a day passes when you aren't in my thoughts. Left you a Lone Star last June at The Wall. The lady said "You know I'll have to remove it at the end of the day". I just grinned at her and told her it would be empty by then, it's OK. Rest in peace, my old friend ... Memorial Day 2005 - Dan
