The Mission

A UH-1B HUEY (tail number 62-02030) of the 20th Aerial Rocket Artilley (ARA) Regiment was shot down while conducting convoy cover along Route 14 about 25 miles south of Pleiku. All four men aboard died in the crash:
  • WO1 David E. Peters, aircraft commander
  • 1LT Colin Keith Nichols, copilot
  • PFC Clifford Lee Carpenter, crew chief
  • PFC Charles Wendle Smith, gunner
