PFC Larry Reissig was one of several replacements with C Battery 2/13 Artillery at Fire Support Base Caroline. Larry was in-country for three weeks when FSB Caroline was attacked with mortar and recoilless-rifle fire on May 13, 1967. Chuck Schultz was present at FSB Caroline, and reports a unit from the 25th Infantry Division was ambushed near the base of Nui Ba Den, the Black Virgin Mountain in Tay Ninh Province. Chuck notes that four of C Battery's six howitzers were knocked out in a lengthy shootout. PFC Charles K. Purcell, SGT James D. Bedgood, and SSG Hulsa D. Wolfe were also fatalities with C Battery on this day at FSB Caroline. Many C Battery personnel were wounded. Four riflemen with a 25th Infantry Division unit and two air-crewmen with a helicopter unit also died in the day's engagement. Chuck reports that C Battery fired several hundred 105mm rounds in support of the 25th Division that day. Larry Reissig is remembered as a new man who barely had time to get acquainted with his gun crew before it was heavily engaged by the enemy. Rest in Peace, PFC Reissig. You are remembered by the Red Dragon Clan. |
