A Note from The Virtual Wall

Shortly after midnight on the morning of 23 Feb 1969 Fire Support Base MAHONE II, located about 7 kilometers south-southeast of Dau Tieng, was attacked by an estimated two battalions of VC. Working under cover of a heavy mortar barrage, VC sappers managed to penetrate one part of the defensive perimeter but were ejected in close combat. Sporadic fighting continued until shortly before daylight, when the VC withdrew. Sweeps around the FSB perimeter after daylight produced the bodies of 71 VS soldiers and 13 more were taken prisoner. Seven men from the 1st Bn, 27th Infantry were killed in the attack:
  • C Company:
    • SP4 Carl F. Belding, White Salmon, WA
    • SP4 Edwin D. Caswell, Lexington, KY
    • PFC Gary E. Johnson, Gastonia, NC
    • PFC Reid M. Naney, Bessemer City, NC

  • D Company:
    • SP4 Curtis Darrisaw, Tennille, GA

  • E Company:
    • SP4 Jay L. Robbins, Stockton, CA

  • HQ Company:
    • SP5 Wilford H. Alderman, Floyd, VA
