Tom Root was a squad leader for Golf 2/7's third platoon. On July 10, 1969 his squad was patrolling in the "Bo Bans," between Cobb Bridge and Tugboat. This was some 8 to 10 miles southwest of Danang. They evidently stopped in the middle of a booby-trap and one of the men set it off. Three were killed at once, Ernie Martinez, Jack Lackey, Doug Whitting. Tom lost both legs and had other injuries. He died on the 27th on a flight to Japan. What I have been told is that he suffered a massive hemorrhage and died. He was promoted to Sergeant after being wounded. Two other men, Jim Whalen and Gary Williams, received very serious wounds to their legs that still bother them today.
