A Note from The Virtual Wall

The 1st Combined Action Group command chronology for November 1969 contains the following entry:

22 November 1969

CAP 1-1-5: Approximately 30 VC initiated grenades, RPG, 60mm mortar, M-79, and small arms on a CAP 1-1-5 patrol at BT251166, 6 kilometers southwest of Tam Ky. The CAP returned organic weapons fire causing the VC to break contact and withdraw to the north. Two USMC, 1 USN, and 2 PFs were KIA. Two USMC were WIA(evac) in the contact. A sweep of the area disclosed 6 VC KIA, 1 AK-47, and 1 RPG.

The three US servicemen who died in the ambush were

  • HM3 Gerald E. Keesling, St Peters, MO;
  • Pfc Peter A. Gruca, Port Reading, NJ; and
  • Pfc Wesley M. Sidener, Burns, KS.
