Marine Lance Corporal David N. Steger, who was due home on leave in time for New Year's, was killed on December 22, 1970, from multiple fragmentation wounds to the body sustained while on a squad mine sweep. In eight more days he was to arrive in the United States for a New Year's reunion with his family.

After his enlistment in January 1970, Steger was sent to Vietnam in July. He was scheduled to finish out his combat duty in July of 1971.

For a short time before he joined the Marines, he worked for his father at his company, the Maryland Fresh Egg Company in Hampstead, MD.

He was killed in Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam. The Marines notified his family of the incident on Christmas eve.
