Tommy was born in Haskell, Oklahoma and grew up in nearby Tulsa, graduating from Central High School in 1954.

In 1966 Tommy became a U.S. Army Warrant Officer and a helicopter pilot after completing Warrant Officer Rotary Wing Aviator Course at Fort Wolters, Texas, and Fort Rucker, Alabama. (Flight School in Class 66-13 ). He was then a assigned to the 191st Assault Helicopter Company, which was stationed at Fort Bragg, NC.

In May of 1967 Tommy deployed to Vietnam with the 191st where he served as an aircraft commander and fire team leader until his untimely death.

He died as a result of gunshot wound received when hit by hostile small arms ground fire while commanding a military aircraft during combat operations.

WO Sandefur was buried near his parents in Memorial Park Cemetery, Tulsa, Oklahoma. At the time he was killed in action, he was survived by his wife Carole A. (Payne) Sandefur and daughter Lisa, son Marc La Grange Georgia; his parents, Neva (1914-2008) and Shalley Terrell Sandefur (1913-1996), Tulsa; and sisters Karalee, Ann, Kaye, and Janet, all of Tulsa.
