A Note from The Virtual Wall

On 26 June 1969 India 3/5 was conducting a search-and-destroy operation in Quang Nam Province. Late in the day they came across what appeared to be an NVA/VC base camp and exchanged fire with enemy troops. They found several dead NVA soldiers and captured one along with various munitions and supplies. The exchanges of fire continued after India 3/5 went into a night defensive position, with five Marines wounded and evacuated. Three of the five died from their injuries:
  • Cpl Richard P. Speakman, Williamsport, OH;
  • LCpl Robert C. Gontero, Lutherburg, PA; and
  • Pfc William H. Roddick, Highland, CA.

Corporal Richard Speakman is remembered
by his comrades-in-arms in the
India Company area of the
3rd Battalion, 5th Marines
