Uncle Le Roy, though many of your family have been and still are saddened by your loss we take great pride in knowing that you and the thousands like you who gave the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam will never be forgotten. We are very thankful for you and the countless others who answered the call to serve and we are in awe of the courage, sacrifice, and service you gave.

You are still very much a part of our family and we still cherish the letters you wrote home. You will never be forgotten in our family. You are still loved and prayed for often by many. I regret never getting to know you, but pray someday, someone will be able to share with us more information about who you were and your service time in Vietnam. Our love and pride for you will never wane and you will always be alive in our hearts and minds.

I hope someday through sacrifices like yours this world will eventually learn that wars are not the answer. Forever our love, respect and admiration.

Your Nephew,
Bruce R.Bundy
as well as your entire family

A Note from The Virtual Wall

Operation FRANCIS MARION was conducted in the western part of Pleiku Province with the intention of hampering North Vietnamese Army infiltration into the area. According to the unofficial 2nd Bn, 8th Infantry history, on 16 April 1967 Charlie 2/8 Infantry was placed at Pleiku City as the II Corp reaction force while the remainder of the battalion stayed in the vicinity of Polei Kleng, about 50 kilometers north-northwest of Pleiku. The following day, 17 April, the battalion lost nine men:
  • B Company:
  • C Company:
    • SGT John F. Bense, Philadelphia, PA
    • SGT Earl L. Derby, Pequot Lakes, MN
    • SP4 Richard H. Bridges, Easley, SC
    • PFC Francisco Garza, Corpus Christi, TX
    • PFC Julio Masso-Perez, Guayama, PR
    • PFC David A. Richardson, Long Beach, CA
    • PFC Emory L. Taylor, Huntington, WV
Neither engagement is mentioned in the 2/8 history, and The Virtual Wall is unable to determine if there is any relation between them.
