07 Dec 2000 Gene Twehous was just a simple 19 year old kid. Barely out of high school. Liked by everyone who knew him. The type of guy who would give you the shirt off his back. Gene was trained as a Hospital Corpman and assigned to duty with the Marines as a combat medic. He was killed during an ambush. Walter R. Love U S Army Vietnam 67/68 loverm@cox.net

01 March 2001 If you are able to include this photograph on Gene's page, it would be most appreciated by myself and many others who knew this absolutely great, totally cool guy we called "The Bird". As a Fleet Marine Corpsman, Hospitalman Gene Twehous saved others' lives and had already been wounded (earning him the Purple Heart Medal) before he rejoined his platoon and went back into the bush. In 1967, while accompanying his platoon across a stream swept by heavy enemy sniper fire, Hospitalman Gene Twehous was fatally wounded after ensuring that all his comrades had made the crossing safely. 4,563 Navy Corpsmen, most serving with Marine infantry units, received the Purple Heart for wounds received in combat. 692 of those Corpsmen died in Vietnam. "You guys are the Marine's doctors - There's none better in the business than a Navy Corpsman ..." -- Lieutenant General "Chesty" Puller -- Visit John Dennison's Medics on the Wall memorial which honors the Army Medics and Navy Corpsmen who died in Vietnam.
