On August 5, 1968 my good friend died helping one of his men. We were inserted into a hot LZ, after taking a lot of heavy fire, as his chopper was coming in and dropping off his team, SP4 Collins was hit in the ankle and couldn't make it to the nearest dike. Eddie ran over to him and tried to carry him to cover, he didn't make it. Collins went on to survive the night; a dozen others were taken to the hospital along with him. A chopper was shot down, one of the medevacs was also heavily damaged. That was my worst day of the whole year. Eddie was and still is a GREAT AMERICAN, and I'm very proud to have known him. Wish you were still here, Eddie my man. Sorry it took me so long to write this to you.

From a good friend and Currahee brother,
SGT John C.
