05 Apr 2006 I did not know Evans Walker, but he was killed along with my cousin CPT Larry Paul Stotler, Evansville, IN, and MAJ Michael F. Field, Arlington, VA. I am sure he is missed by family and friends, and was a good friend to Larry. Lynn Gage Cunningham 27 Apr 2006 * From the Obituary of Evans S. Walker * "He loved the Army." This is the way Blacksburg funeral director Bill Gordon remembers Evans S. "Tip" Walker. Platoon Sergeant Walker, 38, of Smyrna Route 1 in the Hopewell community of Cherokee County, was killed in Vietnam on October 16th when a vehicle in which he was traveling struck a mine. Walker had been in the Army for 23 years, and had volunteered to go to Vietnam. He had been in Blacksburg on 30-day leave before leaving for Vietnam in July. Gordon recalled that when Walker was home, the two of them either would go hunting or fishing. Gordon said when he learned that Walker had volunteered for more combat duty, he asked him why. "He said he just felt like he should go," Gordon said. "I asked him if he wasn't afraid something might happen to him. He said that something could happen to him here, and when his time came, that was it." Walker had been stationed at Fort Knox for just over two years before shipping out to Vietnam. He had worked his way to his rank with a cavalry division the hard way. Walker had served in Japan, in Korea twice, and in Germany twice. He had been wounded three times in Korea. In August 1950, he received machine gun wounds three times in the left thigh. In September of the same year, he received shrapnel wounds of the upper part of the chest. On Feb 18, 1951, while he was bathing in a river, Walker was hit eight times in the chest and abdomen by enemy machine gun bullets. He had been reported killed twice and missing once while in active combat. He received the Purple Heart and two Clusters for the three times he had been wounded. Walker also had been awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Silver Star Medal in addition to a number of other awards. In addition to Korea, he also served during World War II. Sergeant Walker was the husband of Mrs. Hazel Rippy Walker and the son of Jerome and Pansy Hall Walker. Other survivors were sons Edward Eugene and Robert Craig Walker; daughter Geneva Ernestine Walker; brothers Jack and Woodrow Walker, sisters Mrs. Albert Elmore, Mrs. Ervin Dover, and Mrs. William Holloway. 11 Apr 2007 This is dedicated to a brave husband, father, and grandfather. He sacrificed his life for the love of his country. Evans Spencer Walker was my grandfather. He left behind a wife, two sons, and a daughter who loved him greatly. He now has five grandchildren including myself. We didn't know him, but we love the stories of the man he was. My grandfather was so dedicated to his country that he made it his life and fought in three major wars of our history, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam war. He was a decorated working man of the Army. When he was killed, he was an E8 MSGT. When he wasn't fighting, he spent his time training other soldiers. In remembrance of my grandfather I will be visiting DC this spring 2006 for Memorial Day. I will be visiting the memorials for the wars he fought and riding with the Rolling Thunder as we protest over the lack of support that our government has for the missing, captive, and deceased men and women that give their all for all of us. I would like to believe that my grand father would be proud of what he left behind. Rest in peace, you are not forgotten, and will always be loved by all of us!
