Cpl James "Snake" Ward was the real life inspiration for the character "Snake" in James Webb's novel "Fields of Fire". Webb was Ward's platoon commander during Vietnam. Ward in real life was killed in action as he was dragging his wounded comrades to safety. He was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross. Some say he should have received the Medal of Honor. Many who served with him say he was a natural leader and one tough Marine. Semper Fi
