A Note from The Virtual Wall

The 175th Assault Helicopter Company lost four UH-1 Huey helicopters on 31 January 1968. One of the four, UH-1C tail number 66-15009, was on the ground in a hot landing zone (grid coordinates YT058110) when it was hit by a mortar shell, killing PFC Charles A. Yeomans.

The other three aircraft apparently were destroyed when Vinh Long Airfield was attacked as part of the Tet Offensive, which began the night of 31 January 1968. That attack cost at least seven more men, including the Commanding Officer of the airfield:

  • 114th AHC, 13th Avn Bn
    • WO William B. Duncan, Anchorage, AK

  • 199th Avn Co, 307th Avn Bn
    • SP4 Fred K. M. Hatada, Hilo, Hawaii

  • 175th AHC, 13th Avn Bn
    • PFC Kenneth E. Hotchkiss, San Antonio, TX
    • SP4 Thomas W. Moore, Ellicott City, MD
    • SSG Vernon L. Newton, Detroit, MI
    • SGT Donald L. Smith, Bartow, GA

  • 346th Avn Det, 13th Avn Bn
    • LTC Bernard D. Thompson, Los Angeles, CA (CO, Vinh Long Afld)
