I served with Rene August Zimmerle. He was in the 2nd Plt and I was in the central Plt as part of Charlie Co's Forward Observation Team from 1st Bn, 21st Arty. His nickname was AUGIE and he was a close friend. He was killed by friendly fire while setting out trip flares around our Night Defense postion. He is very sadly missed :o((

A Note from The Virtual Wall

The 2/5 Cavalry Operations Log for 13 April 1971 contains the following entry:
"1820 - At grid YS643939, C Co, a patrol was returning to the 2nd Plt NDP, the point man of the patrol sighted 02 individuals and engaged, resulting in 01 KIA. The individuals were members of the 2nd Plt who were setting out trip flares around their NDP."
