REMEMBERED ACROSS THE YEARS

I served with Steve until the time of his death at A-1, Quang Tri Province, Republic of Viet Nam.

I recently came across this picture of Steve that I took in our barracks at 2nd Anglico, FMF Atlantic, Camp LeJeune, NC, during the fall of 1967. I have had this slide in my files for the past 37 years and am pleased to place it on The Virtual Wall in memory of Steve who was my friend as well as a fellow Marine.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

Fire Support Base Alpha 1 was the first in a series of small artillery bases running from east to west just south of the Demilitarized Zone. Because the bases were subject to North Vietnamese artillery fire, everything valuable and everyone spent a lot of time in personnel bunkers.

On 21 May 1968 there was an unforeseeable accident involving five men in a personnel bunker. According to the POW Network , one of the men was cleaning a weapon when it accidentally discharged into a box of illumination grenades. The bunker burned extensively, and there were numerous explosions from the large amount of ammunition stored within the bunker. Two of the men escaped with injuries, but three died:

  • HQ Btry, 12th Marines:
    • LCpl Steven L. Zobel, Oshkosh, WI

  • B Btry, 1st Bn, 40th Artillery
Sergeant Lemcke's body apparently was entirely destroyed by fire and explosion; no identifiable remains were recovered.
