Motivated
by the urgent need to collect the stories and experiences of war veterans
while they are still among us, the U.S. Congress created the Veterans History
Project in October 2000. The legislation calls upon the American Folklife
Center at the Library of Congress to collect and preserve audio- and video-taped
oral histories, along with documents such as letters, diaries, maps, photographs,
and home movies, of America's war veterans and those who served in support
of them during World War I, World War II, and the Korean, Vietnam, and
Persian Gulf wars.

The
Virtual Wall's participation:
Every six months, The Virtual
Wall will give The Veterans History Project a CD-ROM that contains a complete
"snapshot" of The Virtual Wall, with all the personalized memorial pages,
photographs, and indexes. Although different from the oral histories of live
veterans, memorial pages on The Virtual Wall fit within the broad scope
of personal accounts of war. The Virtual Wall began limited distribution of The Virtual Wall
Archive CD-ROM's in 2001, and plans to expand to include numerous libraries
and museums.
We encourage you to visit
the
web pages of the Veterans History Project and join in this worthy endeavor.
