A Note from The Virtual Wall

On 06 May 1970 the 158th AHB was tasked with laying a smoke screen on a landing zone near enemy positions in Quang Tri Province. During the operation, the skids of one helicopter (66-16707) impacted the rotor disk of a second (68-15663), causing both aircraft to crash. While the gunner from 68-15663 survived and was able to report the cause of the incident, seven men died:
  • C/158TH AHB, in UH-1D 66-16707:
    • CWO Clifford E. Poe, Kempner, TX, pilot
    • WO Roger B. Baxter, Junction, TX, pilot
    • SSG Allen G. Kinne, Mesa, WA, crew chief

  • B/158TH AHB, in UH-1H 68-15663:
    • CWO Richard C. Worthington, Bothell, WA (BNR), pilot
    • WO Robert L. Kirk, Las Vegas, NV, copilot
    • SGT Frank S. Hernandez, Fresno, CA (BNR), gunner
    • SP4 William C. Weiss, Hershey, PA, crew chief
Although infantrymen were inserted immediately to recover the remains, two bodies - those of WO Worthington and Sgt Hernandez - could not be located.
